SPORT UTILITY TRAILERS TAP INTO GROWNING NICHE MARKET

The Sport Utility Trailer (SUT), a relatively new addition to the recreation vehicle mix, has been making some significant inroads among the more adventurous RVers.

SUTs cater to the thrill seeker or the serious outdoor sportsman, as functional features and rugged structural design take precedence over creature comforts.

The line features vehicles equipped with a cargo bay, offering ample storage for a variety of toys, such as dirt bikes, snowmobiles and ATVs. The vehicle’s rear door drops down, creating a sturdy ramp for wheeling in off-road vehicles.
"These vehicles have hit the hot button with a growing niche market," explained Bill Prinz, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for RV manufacturer Jayco, Inc. "For off-road enthusiasts, SUTs are the ideal way to travel, combining a large storage area with comfortable living quarters. For hunters, SUTs provide the perfect home base."

Jayco’s Talon™ ZX is loaded with extras, like a drop-down bed, two optional screen attachments and an optional portable power winch. The vehicle’s sleek design is patterned after high-performance racing trailers with a streamlined profile, white radius cornered windows and chrome racing rims.

In addition to the core markets, SUTs have also opened up new buying segments for RVs. The design is suited for any consumer that needs to haul large items over a long distance.

"SUTs can be used by people who go to flea markets or even dog shows," Prinz said. "We still haven’t tapped into all the audiences that would be interested in this vehicle."

Sales have remained steady since SUTs were introduced a few years back. And, as manufacturers continue to cross market, popularity should continue to rise.
