RVING IDEAL FOR TRAVELERS WITH LIMITED MOBILITY

The recreation vehicle industry can provide a convenient and comfortable mode of transportation for travelers with impaired mobility, allowing for modifications and customized features to accommodate special needs.
One of the key advantages is that recreation vehicles are self-contained. Travelers are not dependent on finding accessible facilities for dining and sleeping as RVs comes equipped with kitchen, dining and bedroom areas.
"For people who are not wheelchair-bound but have limited mobility, manufacturers can offer features and open floor plans that are less confining," said Bill Prinz, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for RV manufacturer Jayco, Inc.
Jayco offers an elongated, sturdy handle to assist people entering the vehicle and also interiors that are open and more spacious. Slideout room extensions also provide added space for maneuvering through the vehicle.
Wheelchair bound RVers can look to the RV aftermarket industry for major renovations. Aftermarket specialty shops can retrofit or produce vehicles that are tailored to the needs of disabled travelers with wheelchair lifts, wider doors and custom-made interior features

Hope Sykes, a seasoned RVer and an advocate for disabled RVers, has said, "RVing allows anyone with a special need to focus on the trip rather than always worrying about access. It opens up unlimited opportunities for learning from the road, writing, and enjoying time together as a family."

Many campgrounds offer recreational programs, health and fitness classes designed especially for disabled travelers. Having medical support on the property is also a benefit to RVers with special needs as it can help provide a sense of well-being.

When planning a trip that requires special needs, the following is a list of information to provide the campground owner that can help determine the most accessible site:

- The size of your RV or motorhome
- A site away from heavy traffic
- Hook-up accessibility or location
- Inclines or distances that create a concern for you or a family member
- Location required near a dog walk should you have an assistance dog
